Medical School: Western University of Health Sciences

Hometown: Hillsboro, Oregon
Hobbies/Interests: Traveling, gourmet cooking, contemporary landscaping
Future Goals: ONMM and Functional Medicine
Life in Lewisburg: Small town community, farm-to-table restaurants
Strengths CAMC/GVMC: Anatomy program, diversity of techniques taught by the preceptors
Why ONMM: I knew early on that I wanted to be part of patients' lives by finding health without pharmaceuticals and surgery. It seemed like an impossible task until I found osteopathy. I can't think of any other discipline that can restore a person's well-being by simply listening with one's hands. Every day I am reminded about the body's ability to repair, and it is the job of the osteopath to allow this miracle to occur.

Benjamin Keaton, DO

Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Hometown: Kaysville, UT
Hobbies/Interests: Being married to my best friend and being a father of four wonderful children. Practicing my faith, playing group sports and yard games, exercising and playing the piano and guitar.
Future Goals: Private Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine practice specialized in treating athletes, obstetric and pediatric patients; Regenerative Injection Therapies, Functional Medicine; Sports Medicine; Addiction Medicine; Acupuncture; Neurofeedback.
Life in Lewisburg: Homey small town with nearby state forest with safe and easy access to hiking trails; swimming, floating or fishing the river; a swimming pool and playgrounds. My kids have enjoyed little-league sports, strong gymnastic, dance and martial arts programs, as well as regular activities at the local library and children's events at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Our kids love the elementary school. There are several religious denominations in the area and the crime rate is extremely low - we've never felt safer.
Strengths of CAMC/GVMC: Ability to table train at WVSOM in the manipulation labs as well as in the anatomy lab; consistent continuity clinic every week throughout the whole program, hospital ONMM consultation service for ICU, post-surgical, general admitted patients, as well as mothers and babies in the labor and delivery unit. We have a wide variety of diverse ONMM providers and attendings helping our training to be more comprehensive and versatile.
Why ONMM: It is a specialty that allows the most freedom to apply true osteopathic principles. With the advancement of technology and AI, the ability to treat patients with my hands, rather than relying on drugs and invasive procedures, is becoming more rare and unique. Wellness and health can only be enjoyed if there is care for the spirit and mind - not just the body - and ONMM gives opportunities for this comprehensive training.

Medical School: Midwestern University - Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine

Hometown: Chicago, IL
Hobbies/Interests: Movies, playing sports, playing instruments, anything tech, chess, video games, traveling
Life in Lewisburg: Small and quant city, nearby hiking trails, beautiful scenery, very little traffic, friendly people
Future Goals: Work part time faculty and part time clinic position and eventually open a clinic with my older brother who is a current Neurology resident
Strengths of CAMC/GVMC: Being a table trainer for the first year medical students in anatomy lab with the opportunity to dissect a cadaver throughout the year and relearn anatomy without the stress of looming examinations, very personal relationship with attendings who are always on site at the hospital, a large diversity of faculty with various strengths in OMT that are always willing to teach and always having opportunities to perform OMT on patients or staff in the hospital and clinic setting.
Why ONMM: I have always favored a hands-on approach to patient care and OMM provides that opportunity completely. Many times, OMT allows for non-invasive relief that patients can feel before leaving the office. I feel that many times, medicine tries to treat symptoms of pain while OMT provides a route to diagnose and treat the underlying problem which is crucial for short and long term pain relief. The ability to fully utilize that crucial extra tool in out DO pockets is both an honor and a privilege.

Why ONMM: A balance lifestyle has always been important to me. With osteopathic manipulation, I get to appreciate and interact with the connectedness of the human body on a whole new level. I feel like an integral role of my patient's care and benefiting the surrounding community with the freedom to practice how I want to as my capabilities evolve. There is time to be present with my family and to pursue my own personal interests as well as take care of myself as a human being.

Strengths of CAMC/GVMC: Work/life balance, camaraderie, in-depth anatomy, amazing faculty
Why ONMM: I chose to specialize in neuromuscular medicine because I want to be able to address the root cause of any imbalance in my patients' health. By using my hands, I identify anatomical restrictions that are contributing to any physiological dysfunctions that are contributing to their disease. I get to empower their body's own innate self-healing mechanism to bring their body back towards health.

Strengths of CAMC/GVMC: One of the biggest strengths is how supportive the program is in your growth. There are a lot of different ways to practice medicine and they support you following your won goals while ensuring that you are competent in everything. There are a lot of teaching opportunities in this program. It also feels like a family and everyone supports each other.
Why ONMM: Why not ONMM? It is by far the coolest and most interesting specialty out there. There is great work-life balance. You can tailor the program to fit your specific interests. There is a large need for more ONMM providers. People often come in feeling bad and leave feeling a lot better, and that's why I got into medicine in the first place.
