Integrated Health Education Center Courses

The following courses are offered at the Integrated Health Education Center.

Basic Life Support training reinforces healthcare professionals' understanding of the importance of early CPR and defibrillation, basic steps of performing CPR, relieving choking, using an AED and the role of each link in the Chain of Survival. This course covers all aspects of CPR and AED use and includes both a written and skills evaluation.


Course Length:  4 hours

Course Covers:

  • Adult, Child and Infant CPR
  • Relief of Airway Obstruction
  • Use of barrier devices for ventilation
  • Bag Valve Mask device use
  • Use of an AED
  • AHA Chain of Survival
  • Team Dynamics

The Heartsaver courses combine the skills of CPR with operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This course is designed for individuals who will be part of a response team in Public Access Defibrillation programs and does include a written evaluation and a skills evaluation.

Course Length:  3 - 6 hours

Course Covers:

  • Adult, Child and Infant CPR
  • Relief of Airway Obstruction
  • Use of barrier devices for ventilations
  • Use of an AED
  • First Aid

The BLS Instructor Course is designed to develop proficiency in teaching a BLS provider course.  The BLS instructor course will introduce the instructor candidate to adult teaching theory including a case based method of teaching.

Validation:  
Participants must successfully complete the online Instructor Essentials program before taking the instructor course.   Upon completion the instructor will receive a Basic Life Support instructor card.  The card is valid for a two-year period.  This course has not been approved for Continuing Education Credit.

Course Length: Provider course (4 to 6 hours)

Course objectives:

I. How to make effective presentations of BLS information and materials.
II. How to function as the leader and participant in all components of a BLS provider course.
III. How to create, present, and lead the teaching modules:

  • Case-based scenarios
  • Case discussion
  • Skills instruction and evaluation
  • Practice stations
  • Remediation stations
  • Written annotated examination  

 IV. Understand the educational philosophy of the BLS program
 

The ACLS Course is designed to give the Healthcare Provider the basic knowledge to care for the patient in cardiac arrest and to manage acute coronary syndromes and stroke. During this course you will learn by observing, discussing, and doing. ACLS instructors will help you achieve success in completing the listed objectives. Participants who complete the class will receive an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support provider card.  The card is valid for a two-year period.  Participants will also receive documentation of appropriate continuing medical education credit.  This course is approved for Nursing, Physician, Pharmacy, AANA and EMS credit.

Requirements:
The ACLS pre-test must be completed and the results brought to the CAMC Simulation Center before or the day of the course.
Course Length:
Provider course- Two Days  (12 to 16 hours)
Renewal course- One Day (4 to 7 hours)

Course objectives:
I. Manage the first 10 minutes of a cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation.

  • Provide BLS Care, including proper operation of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • Provide proper operation of a conventional defibrillator.
  • Provide an advanced airway and recognize achievement versus nonachievement of an airway.
  • Obtain vascular access.

II. Apply the 4 arrest algorithms.

  • VF/Pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT).
  • Pulseless electrical activity (PEA).
  • Asystole
  • Respiratory arrest

III. Recognize and manage prearrest conditions that may lead to cardiac arrest such as:

  • Acute coronary syndromes
  • Symptomatic arrhythmias
  • Respiratory failure
  • Acute stroke

 

The ACLS Instructor Course is designed to develop proficiency in teaching an ACLS provider course.  The ACLS instructor course will introduce the instructor candidate to adult teaching theory including a case based method of teaching.

Participants who complete the class will receive an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support instructor card.  The card is valid for a two-year period.  Participants will also receive documentation of appropriate continuing medical education credit.  This course is approved for Nursing, Physician, Pharmacy, AANA and EMS credit.

Course Length:
Instructor course- One Day  (6 hours)
Course objectives:

I. How to make effective presentations of ACLS information and materials.
II. How to function as the leader and participant in all components of an ACLS provider course.
III. Know how to set up and use educational presentation tools such as computer-based video projectors
IV.  How to create, present, and lead the teaching modules:

  • Case-based scenarios
  • Case discussion
  • Skills instruction and evaluation
  • Practice stations
  • Remediation stations
  • Written annotated examination

V.  Understand the educational philosophy of the ACLS program.
 

PALS is a classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course that uses a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation and team dynamics. Participants who complete the class will receive a Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider card.  The card is valid for a two-year period.  Participants will also receive documentation of appropriate continuing medical education credit.  This course is approved for Nursing, Physician, Pharmacy, AANA and EMS credit.

Requirements:
The PALS pre-test must be completed and the results brought to the CAMC Simulation Center before or the day of the course.

I. Recognize and treat infants and children in cardiac arrest.
II. Understand strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children.
III. Understand the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Shock
  • Cardiopulmonary arrest

Course Length: Instructor course - One Day  (6 hours)

V.  Understand the educational philosophy of the PALS program

The first few minutes of trauma care are critical to achieving better patient outcomes. The ENA’s Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is widely recognized as the premier course for hospitals and trauma centers worldwide, empowering nurses with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and hands-on training to provide expert care for trauma patients. The TNCC Course provides core level knowledge both in terms of cognitive and psychomotor skills based on the six-phase trauma nursing process as the standard of care.

Validation:
RN’s, LPN’s and paramedics who complete the class will receive the Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) provider card good for four years.  They will also receive 12 hours nursing credit from the ENA.  Paramedics may audit the course for 12 hours of continuing education from the West Virginia Office of Emergency medical Services.  

Course Length: Provider course- Two days (12 to 16 hours)   

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the common mechanisms of injury associated with trauma.
  • Describe the pathophysiologic changes as a basis for signs and symptoms.
  • Describe the nursing assessment of patients with trauma.
  • Based on the assessment data, identify appropriated nursing diagnoses and expected outcomes for the trauma patient.
  • Describe mechanisms for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions for patients with trauma.
  • Rapid identification of life-threatening injuries
  • Comprehensive patient assessment
  • Enhanced intervention for better patient outcomes

TNCC Trauma Nursing Core Course Provider Manual, 7th Edition is required for the course and is available from your course director.
Access the online modules here using the code you receive when you register. You may purchase the online modules separately for $49.95; however, please note that this amount cannot be applied to the registration fee for the full TNCC.
 

The Advanced Trauma Life Support course goal is to orient the participants to the initial assessment and management if the trauma patient.  This is a physician-based course but physician extenders, physician assistants and nurse practitioners are also eligible for credit.

Prerequisite:  
The ATLS Provider must be a licensed physician, PA or NP.
The course may be audited by Nurses, PAs and Paramedics for Continuing Education only.

Validation:
Participants who complete the class will receive an ATLS provider card. The card is valid for a four-year period. Participants will also receive documentation of appropriate continuing medical credit through the American College of Surgeons.
 
Course Length:
Provider course- Two days (18 to 20 hours)

Course objectives:

  • Assess the patient's condition rapidly and accurately.
  • Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority.
  • Determine if the patient's needs exceed a facility's capabilities.
  • Arrange appropriately for the patient's inter-hospital transfer (what, who, when, and how).
  • Assure that optimum care is provided.
