Biography

Gregory Christopher Mathews, MD, is a neurologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of seizures and epilepsy. Dr. Mathews holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He earned his medical degree and PhD from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He completed his residency training in neurology and fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, followed by a research fellowship at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Synaptic Physiology Unit. Dr. Mathews served on the faculty in the Departments of Neurology and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville from 2003 to 2010, where his research focused on the basic physiology and pharmacology of inhibition in the brain with funding from NINDS and CURE. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with special qualification in Clinical Neurophysiology.  

Dr. Mathews has published extensively in scientific and medical journals and has held leadership positions in the American Epilepsy Society. Before joining CAMC, he ran an epilepsy specialty practice in Silver Spring, MD, and was the medical director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and EEG Laboratory at Holy Cross Hospital. He joined the department of Neurology at CAMC in April 2025, where he is the co-director of the Epilepsy Center.  

Dr. Mathews works to use the current state-of-the-art treatments for people with epilepsy and to offer them every possible option to control their seizures.
