The CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine has received accreditation from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties to launch a Headache Medicine Fellowship at Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center.

UCNS accreditation signifies that a program provides the core curriculum established by the subspecialty and meets the UCNS quality standards. Graduates of UCNS-accredited programs meet the training eligibility requirements to apply for subspecialty certification.

The fellowship program will begin in 2027 under the leadership of Program Director Catherine Ham, MD, who is also the director of the CAMC Headache Center. Dr. Ham, board-certified in neurology and headache medicine, is a fellow of the American Headache Society and serves as the West Virginia representative in the Southern Headache Society.

"The support of the Institute for Academic Medicine was instrumental in securing approval of our first neurology fellowship, and we are sincerely grateful for their partnership," said Dr. Ham. "This program will strengthen our ability to bring highly trained neurology subspecialists to our community while advancing our commitment to world-class neuroscience care at Vandalia Health."

The Headache Medicine Fellowship at CAMC will recruit participants through a centralized application process, with additional details to be announced soon. Participants will benefit from training at the new Vandalia Health Neuroscience Institute, which is under construction in downtown Charleston, WV.

"We are thrilled to have received this milestone, which is a concrete example of and reflects the values of the Institute for Academic Medicine and Vandalia Health to develop workforce pathways to support the healthcare needs of our community," said Dink Jardine, MD, FACS, designated institutional official and chief academic officer of the Institute for Academic Medicine. "Dr. Ham and the entire headache team have done amazing work to get to this point and look forward to the first graduates in the coming years to continue to care for our patients."

With the addition of this program, the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine will operate 24 graduate medical education programs, three pharmacy residency programs, an advanced practice provider critical care fellowship, a clinical psychology internship and two postdoctoral clinical psychology programs.

More than a third of graduates from CAMC's programs establish practice or continue training in West Virginia, improving access to care in the state.
