The CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine is pleased to announce that Mark Gustafson, DO, FACEP, has been appointed associate designated institutional official.
In this role, Dr. Gustafson will help guide graduate medical education across Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center, focusing on collaboration, mentorship and innovation to support learners and faculty across all its programs. He will work closely with Dink Jardine, MD, FACS, designated institutional official and chief academic officer.
“Over the years, I have seen firsthand the impact that a supportive and engaged culture has on program directors, faculty and residents,” Dr. Gustafson said. “In this new role, I am excited to expand those efforts by strengthening relationships, creating structure that helps programs thrive and ensuring our learners have the tools and resources they need to excel.”
Dr. Gustafson is the program director of CAMC’s Emergency Medicine Residency. He earned his medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012 and completed CAMC’s Emergency Medicine Residency as a chief resident in 2016.
Following residency, he joined the CAMC Emergency Medicine faculty, was promoted to associate program director for the residency program in 2018 and became program director in 2020.
Dr. Gustafson is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine and has extensive experience in graduate medical education leadership. He is a past chair of CAMC’s Special Review Committee, vice chair of the Institute’s Graduate Medical Education Committee and past president of the West Virginia American College of Emergency Physicians.
Nationally, he is involved with the CORD Remediation Committee and ACEP Academic Affairs Committee, and he represents West Virginia at the ACEP Council.
“I am also eager to partner with Dr. Jardine, our program leaders and institutional stakeholders to advance key initiatives such as program growth, accreditation oversight and enhanced support for learners,” Dr. Gustafson said.
“By aligning our efforts with the broader mission of CAMC and Vandalia Health, we can continue to improve learning environments, drive innovation and ensure that our community receives the highest quality care. For me, this role is about more than oversight; it is about helping to shape a culture of excellence and support that will serve our learners, faculty and ultimately our patients for years to come.”
Please join the Institute in congratulating Dr. Gustafson!
