The Charleston Area Medical Center Institute for Academic Medicine will be sponsoring one postdoctoral fellow position in Child Psychology in the 2026-2027 academic year. This position will offer the fellow a planned, programmed sequence of supervised training experiences to acquire advanced skills in child clinical psychology.

Setting the stage

Thank you for your interest in the Child Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center. The development of this Fellowship reflects the challenges that so many youth face with mental health in the United States. Nationwide, 20% of children and young people ages 3-17 have a mental, emotional, developmental or behavioral disorder. Mental health challenges are the leading cause of death and disability in children. Recent results from the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicate the challenges are compounded in children in West Virginia. Survey data from middle and high school students showed that 47% of kids experienced clinical depression; nearly 30% seriously considered dying by suicide. Our region has limited behavioral health care resources generally and very few child behavioral health resources.

However, the clinical teams CAMC have a longstanding record of excellence in child psychology and psychiatry treatment, outreach, scholarship and service. Furthermore, the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine is committed to expanding our footprint with additional training programs in the future. In 2024, we welcomed our first class of Child Clinical Psychology Interns to expand our reach, serving kids in our region while also providing the highest quality training in the delivery of evidence-based psychological services. We have now begun to recruit a Child Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellow for a position starting in summer 2026. We are a faculty that greatly values teaching, supervision, mentorship and service; we couldn't be more thrilled to expand! These efforts, plus faculty and clinical service growth, are investments in our community and hospital system and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in meeting the behavioral health needs of children in our catchment area.

Goals for the fellowship

The primary goals of the Child Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship are to:

  • Develop advanced clinical skills necessary to care for child clinical and pediatric populations.
  • Teach professionalism and ethical decision-making.
  • Provide clinical teaching and supervision.
  • Consult with medical faculty and learners.
  • Collaborate on interprofessional teams.
  • Use relevant research and scholarship across settings to inform care.

This fellowship is an ideal springboard for a position in a pediatric/child clinical health care setting, academic medical center or university-based program.
