Comprehensive Clinical Training
The concept of combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry graduate medical education training for physicians began in West Virginia. This program from the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine was the second such residency program in the United States. For over 35 years, Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center has maintained a strong commitment to combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry training. Our program is now the longest continuously operating Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Residency program in the United States. Our graduates are now active in many areas of medical practice, ranging from academia to private practice.
The training is designed to prepare graduates for diverse opportunities in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, combined practice or fellowships in either field.
Strengths of the program include experienced Medicine and Psychiatry faculty, many of whom are graduates of our program and work in both departments to oversee the program and coordinate training between the two. The chief Internal Medicine and Psychiatry resident position provides visibility and leadership among the house staff. The longevity of the program offers a mature and stable training environment. The program includes a combined Med/Psych clinic, under faculty direction, to enhance integrated clinical experiences.
