Psychiatry PGY-1 Frequently Asked Questions

What are your cut-off scores/performance criteria for the USMLE?
We prefer 80/200 or higher on each step of USMLE 1 & 2 (or COMLEX) with no more than 2 attempts to pass each part. Passing on the first attempt carries more weight for us.
You must take and pass step 3 before you can advance to PG-2 level in our program. There may or may not be a 6 month grace period allowed to complete it, if you haven't passed by end of PG-1 year. You will be dismissed from the program if you fail to pass step 3 within 18 months of starting the program as a PG-1.  All entering residents must register for step 3 within 3 months of beginning the program and take it prior to the end of the 8th month of training.

Do you require prior psychiatry experience or other clinical experience in the USA?
For international graduates one year of post graduate experience in a psychiatric setting, either as a house officer in another country, clinical research, or externship/observership in USA is preferred. Some portion of this may be excused for other clinical/research work (neurosciences) in US, but generally the more psych experience the better.

What visas will you sponsor?
Individuals matching to a CAMC program or fellowship must seek an appropriate visa/work authorization prior to training.

Any other requirements?
You must have a driver's license or obtain one (and a vehicle) quickly upon starting, as our sponsoring institution involves 3 hospitals within a 5 mile radius and driving between campuses is necessary.

How do I apply and what is your deadline?
We accept applications only via ERAS, deadline Dec. 1. A complete application including USMLE transcripts via ERAS must be received by then. We expect a Dean's letter and 3 other letters of reference, as well as a personal statement explaining your interest in psychiatry. This statement must be in your own words. Any portion that is discovered to appear to be plagiarized from another source will disqualify your application from further consideration. IMG's must be ECFMG certified by the start of training, and should submit their ECFMG certificate via ERAS as well. Delays in our receiving any portion of the application will likely delay our reaching a decision on inviting someone to interview.

When are interviews scheduled?
We generally interview from November through early February. Tuesday and Thursday are the preferred days for general psychiatry interviews. Wednesday is the preferred day for medicine-psychiatry candidates.

How many positions do you offer/ Do you offer pre-Match contracts?
We offer 3 general psychiatry (4 year) positions and 2 medicine-psychiatry (5 year) positions each year via the NRMP and do not offer pre-Match contracts. You can apply to both programs (separate program ID numbers in NRMP.) Dr. James P. Griffith is the medicine-psychiatry director.

Do you offer observerships/externships?
Not at this time.
