Charleston Area Medical Center and the Department of Surgery are pleased to offer a one–year, post–residency, non-accredited fellowship in Cleft and Craniomaxillofacial surgery.

Comprehensive Clinical Training

The fellowship was established in 2005 and focuses on all aspects of the care of pediatric and adult cleft and craniomaxillofacial patients with congenital and acquired deformities and pathology.  Additionally, the fellow is provided opportunity to receive exposure to pediatric airway management, otology (including cochlear implants), oncology, facial cosmetic, and facial trauma and reconstructive surgery with faculty within the specialty of OMFS, ENT & Plastic Surgery.

The Charleston Area Medical Center Cleft and Craniofacial Team is an ACPA (American Cleft Palate Association) approved team providing multi-disciplinary longitudinal care to patients with cleft lip, cleft palate and craniosynostosis. The fellow is involved in all phases of care coordination and management from neonate through adulthood. The fellow will also have direct clinical exposure to and experience with prenatal counseling, primary and secondary cleft lip and palate surgery, feeding in the neonate and infant, nasoendoscopy, cranioplasty, secondary cranial reconstruction, management of vascular malformations and pediatric dermatopathology.

Education and Research Opportunities

The fellow will participate in educational activities including surgical and pediatric grand rounds, case conference, CAMC-sponsored symposia, journal club.  Research is welcomed and available anticipating that the fellow will publish a peer reviewed article. The fellow is expected to attend and the American Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Association and encouraged to attend local meetings and conferences. The fellow is institutionally supported to attend one national meeting per year or more if presenting.  

Salary and Benefits

The fellowship is funded by CAMC, through the office of Graduate Medical Education at a PGY 6 or 7 level. CAMC offers a comprehensive salary and benefit package for residents and fellows.
