Mark Gustafson

Mark Gustafson, DO, FACEP

Program Director

Dr. Mark Gustafson graduated from Lincoln Memorial University- Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in 2012 and then completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in 2016, where he was Chief Resident. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Gustafson stayed at CAMC and started teaching as core faculty for the CAMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program. In 2018, Dr. Gustafson was named Associate Program Director where he served for two years until being named program director in 2020. 

Dr. Gustafson is a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and serves as a board member for the WV Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has a strong interest in medical education, resident wellness, promotion of diversity and inclusion, simulation and research. Dr. Gustafson is the medical director for the CAMC Simulation Center and has worked to advance the simulation experiences for the program. Dr. Gustafson serves as a journal reviewer and has research interests that include medical education, simulation, lactic acid, emergency cardiology and venous thromboembolism. 

In his free time Dr. Gustafson enjoys spending time with his wife Brooke and their two kids, golfing, mountain biking, and fly fishing. 

Jessica Sop

Jessica Sop, DO

Associate Program Director

Dr. Sop received her doctorate degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. She did an internship at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in San Bernadino, California, and then a residency through Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Sop has been a core faculty member of CAMC’s EM program since 2008 and is currently the associate program director.

Brian Hensley

Brian Hensley, MD

Clerkship Director

Dr. Brian Hensley received his medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine in 2012. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency in Greenville, NC at East Carolina University in 2015. Dr. Hensley returned to his home state and began working at CAMC as a core faculty member of the residency in 2016. In 2017 Dr. Hensley was appointed the Clerkship Director and has been serving in this capacity ever since.

Christy Shaw

Christy Shaw, MS, C-TAGME

Program Coordinator

Christy Shaw was born and raised in WV, and earned a BS in Exercise Physiology from WVU School of Medicine in 1994.  After receiving an MS in Athletic Training from California University of PA in 1995, she worked several years as a certified athletic trainer in PA and VA, providing medical care for collegiate sports along with classroom and clinical instruction to undergraduate students.  She relocated to Charleston, WV in 2004, working in private insurance for a workers’ compensation third-party administrator until joining the CAMC team in June 2014.  Her hobbies and interests include outdoor recreation, home improvement projects and reading historical fiction.
