Comprehensive Clinical Training
CAMC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as a sponsoring institution of graduate medical education residency and fellowship programs. The CAMC Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency is sponsored by CAMC in collaboration with West Virginia University Health Sciences Charleston Campus, an affiliate educational partner.
As the state's largest medical facility and a regional tertiary care center, CAMC serves a large and diverse population. CAMC offers many specialized services that cannot be found elsewhere in our region, including high-risk obstetrics and gynecologic oncology. We run very busy services in each of these areas, providing abundant learning opportunities and experience to residents.
There are no OB-GYN fellowships at CAMC. Thus, residents get first-hand experience, advanced hands-on training in the subspecialties and ample research opportunities. We accept transfers and referrals from our regions and see a broad spectrum of pathologic entities. In addition to intensive subspecialized training, opportunities to manage routine clinical problems and perform core surgical procedures are plentiful. Residents manage their own continuity clinic patients and learn fundamental clinical management strategies in the "real-life" setting.
In addition to our full-time faculty, we have many experienced local private obstetrician-gynecologists who serve as associate clinical faculty. We assist with all of their Cesarean sections and most of their gynecological surgeries, and provide pre-operative and post-operative care under their guidance. In addition to covering our inpatient services, faculty also attend our continuity clinics. This provides a unique opportunity to learn clinical management and a host of varied surgical techniques from accomplished physicians with diverse educational and clinical backgrounds.
The program advances three physicians at each level through four years of training in a non-pyramidal system. It is designed to provide the house officer with broad clinical training in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology and exposure to all subspecialty areas. As residents progress through the program, they are expected to acquire increased knowledge at each succeeding level. The training is designed to allow residents to develop independent thought and action by providing increased levels of experience under faculty supervision.
Education and Research
The educational objective of the program is to provide the highest possible education and training in clinical, academic and surgical skills. We also strive to provide patients with a caring, compassionate and professional environment in which health maintenance, preventive care and appropriate treatment are our top priorities. We strive to prepare our residents for the dual roles of being a primary care physician to women and a consultant and surgical specialist. Mutual respect and teamwork are emphasized. Residents actively participate in continuing education, medical student education and research. The faculty provides the necessary support and guidance.
